Expert Opinion On ASUU: "Strikers Risk Losing Public Sympathy"



Leading scientists from Eduwatch Consult and Research Centre are sure that time is running out for university lecturers to end their lingering strike and warns the strikers that they can lose public sympathy if the strike continues.


It came when mothers and women traders marched in solidarity in Abuja on Monday demanding Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to end its strike.

Group coordinator Abayomi Ogunnowo says ASUU need to make some sacrifice based on the variants suggested by the Federal Government. Is is required in order to mitigate the decaying infrastructure in the universities, considering the fate of millions of students hanging in the balance.


Ogunnowo stated:

“Trade unions in the education sector must end the strikes and save the education sector from collapse,” said Ogunnowo.

He also pointed out that Nigeria is the only country where lecturers go on strike to register their grievances with government.

Olusegun Oyewale of Eduwatch, which consist of researchers and analysts in academia, said:

“I would really advise our dear lecturers to bow out now that the ovation is loudest. At the moment, the public have seen no reason in continuing with this strike.”

Oyewale said past delays, neglects of previous government have cost lecturers their trust in government, but insisted the present government in its negotiations since July has demonstrated the will power to resolve the issue by agreeing to provide N130 billion outside the budget out of a total N400 billion requested by the union.

Nigerians to pay £3,000 to enter Britain

LONDON (AFP) – Britain is planning to force visitors from India, Pakistan, Nigeria and other countries whose nationals are deemed to pose a “high risk” of immigration abuse to provide a cash bond before they can enter the country, a report said Sunday. The Sunday Times newspaper said that from November, a pilot scheme would target visitors from those three countries plus Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Ghana. Visitors aged 18 and over would be forced to hand over £3,000 ($4,600, 3,500 euros) from November for a six-month visit visa.

#ASUUStrikeENDSOON: FG agrees to spend N200b on Nigerian universities every year for 4 years (READ)

In an effort to end the ongoing ASUU strike, the Federal Government has said it is committed to  spending N200 billion in the 2014 budget on universities in Nigeria for about three to four years until the universities are brought to world-class standard. This is in addition to the N100 billion dedicated and already made available for 2013. The government has also increased to N40 billion as a first installment for the funds in payment of earned allowances to the striking lecturers, which is an improvement from the N30 billion previously released. According to sources, the information is s contained in an internal statement made by the  Vice-Chancellor,  Professor Bolaji Aluko of Federal University of Otuoke and was seen on Wednesday by Sahara reporters.
