Bad roads: FG to reintroduce toll gates

A Lagos Toll Gate Against the backdrop of deteriorating Federal roads nationwide, the Federal Government may have decided to reintroduce tolling on its highways, to raise money to fix the roads. A policy document on the reintroduction of tolling may be forwarded to the Federal Executive Council by Works Minister, Mike Onolememen, for approval and implementation. The policy document is known as Green Paper: Federal Roads and Bridges Tolling Policy for Nigeria.’

Nigeria move up three places in latest Fifa ranking

The Super Eagles have been rewarded for their victory in Addis Ababa with an upward move in the Fifa rankings released on Thursday Nigeria have moved up to the 33rd position in the latest Fifa global rankings released on Thursday. The Super Eagles gained three spots from last month's ranking following their victory against Ethiopia in Sunday's World Cup first leg play-off in Addis Ababa.

In an effort to end the ongoing ASUU strike, the Federal Government has said it is committed to  spending N200 billion in the 2014 budget on universities in Nigeria for about three to four years until the universities are brought to world-class standard. This is in addition to the N100 billion dedicated and already made available for 2013. The government has also increased to N40 billion as a first installment for the funds in payment of earned allowances to the striking lecturers, which is an improvement from the N30 billion previously released. According to sources, the information is s contained in an internal statement made by the  Vice-Chancellor,  Professor Bolaji Aluko of Federal University of Otuoke and was seen on Wednesday by Sahara reporters.

Nigerian 11-Year-Old Girl Becomes Ambassador In Tanzania

Zuriel Oduwole, a Nigeria wonder girl advocating for education for the girl child in Africa at the age of 10 already became the youngest person ever interviewed by Forbes. Now  Zuriel  is 11 and she has been appointed Ambassador in Tanzania. It was the girl's second country stop on her East African leg to launch the acclaimed Dream Up, Speak Up, Stand Up program, aimed at inspiring and motivating Africa’s girls. When the girl's plane landed, she was welcomed by senior officials of the Tanzanian State House, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Ministry of Education. On the first day Zuriel visited one of the oldest academic institutions in Dar Es Salaam, the Olympio School.

Expert Opinion On ASUU: "Strikers Risk Losing Public Sympathy"

Leading scientists from Eduwatch Consult and Research Centre are sure that time is running out for university lecturers to end their lingering strike and warns the strikers that they can lose public sympathy if the strike continues. It came when mothers and women traders marched in solidarity in Abuja on Monday demanding Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to end its strike. Group coordinator Abayomi Ogunnowo says ASUU need to make some sacrifice based on the variants suggested by the Federal Government. Is is required in order to mitigate the decaying infrastructure in the universities, considering the fate of millions of students hanging in the balance.

Tunde Bakare Backs Jonathan On National Conference, Tackles Tinubu

From the left, Pastor Tunde Bakare Convener of the Save Nigeria Group (SNG), Tunde Bakare, has welcomed the proposed national conference with some level of caution but warned that if the nation does not talk before the next general elections, the country might cease to exist. The pastor of the Latter Rain Assembly gave this remark at the launch and maiden lecture of the Centre for Change in Lagos on Tuesday, where he noted that Nigeria should be a model for not only Africa but the black race. Mr Bakare who is a stunch critic of President Goodluck Jonathan, subtly endorsed the planned conference at the event which had the theme; retriving the soul of a country in ruins.
