ASUP Agrees To Call Off Strike

At the meeting organized on Tuesday by the Joint Committee on Education of the National Assembly, the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) has agreed to call off the strike as soon as possible - once their demands are met. The meeting sought to resolve the confrontation between the Federal Government, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), and ASUP. Rukayat Rufai, the Minister of Education, and Chukwuemeka Nwogu, the Minister of Labour and Productivity were present at the meeting.

Shocking series of text messages between rapper 50 Cent and his 15-Year-Old son, Marquise Jackson has recently been published. It was reported last week that the rapper was arrested for allegedly attacking his baby mama. The texts were reportedly exchanged before them. The abusive exchange, which began at 10.59 p.m and lasted for more than an hour, started after Marquis failed to open the door when 50cent came to see him. The rapper used some very obscene words to describe his son while adding that he does not believe he (50 Cent) truly fathered the 15-year-old. US website, RadarOnline claim they verified the texts originated from a cell phone registered to G Unit Touring, the record label created and owned by 50 Cent. President of ASUU, Dr. Nasir Isa Fagge IN the heat of the current strike action embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, the association has accused the federal government of insincerity at moving the education sector forward.    It also blamed the government for speaking from both sides of the mouth.   The non-implementation of the 2009 agreement that was reached between the federal government and the union was among the four fundamental issues that forced the university dons to down tools. Also, the issue of university autonomy and academic freedom, coupled with staff welfare and condition of service also formed part of contending areas that triggered the industrial action.

THE pomp and ecstasy that heralded the arrival of the popular Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) System five years ago in Lagos is fast dying away as most buses on the system have basically become molue- Nigeria’s slang for rickety and sullied big buses.  The BRT is an intra-city public transport initiative instituted by the then Governor Bola Tinubu of Lagos State in 2007, but actuallised by Governor Babatunde Fashola-led administration in 2008 to alleviate challenges of Lagos heavy traffic jams, bus scarcity among others.

Islamist protests hit cities across Egypt, at least 24 dead

(Reuters) - At least 24 people died across Egypt on Friday as Islamists opposed to the overthrow of President Mohamed Mursi took to the streets to vent their fury at what they say was a military coup. Fierce clashes in the Mediterranean city of Alexandria left 12 dead and 200 injured, while in Cairo, five people were killed as pro- and anti-Mursi protesters ran amok in central areas and armored personnel carriers rumbled among them to restore calm. Five police officers were gunned down in separate incidents in the North Sinai town of El Arish, and while it was not clear whether the attacks were linked to Mursi's ouster, hardline Islamists there have warned they would fight back.

In a surprise move from one of the longest serving Magpie players, he informed the managers of the national team that the clause in his contract that prevented him from being at the Africa Nations Cup had now been removed. A report from the Eagles camp in Kaduna says that Team Secretary, Dayo Achor, briefed Nigeria coach Stephen Keshi on the player’s correspondence with the Nigeria Football Federation. The secretary told Keshi, “He said the clause has been removed and he will be ready to play for the Super Eagles anytime he is called upon.”

Exasperated by the way Nigeria handles the homosexuality matter, an Irish hacker -- who goes by the monicker Paddyhack -- has conducted a cyber attack on the official government of Nigeria's website. The 'assault' is apparently aimed at making President Jonathan to veto the bill according to which all homosexuals in Nigeria are subject to imprisonment. The website was attacked on Thursday night; though things were later restored, it remains unknown if it were the officials that took matters in their hands, or the attackers stepped back. Naij.com reminds that, according to the anti-gay bill, recently passed by the National Assembly of Nigeria to the vigorous support of Nigerians, convicted homosexual persons are subject to 14-years imprisonment.

Fake ‘Youth Corp member’ To Be Jailed

A suspected fake National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, member, Opeyemi Ajala, 34, has been remanded in prison custody after he was arrested by the police at Dolphin Division, Ikoyi, Lagos, southwest Nigeria, and charged to court. He allegedly told the police that he was contracted by Olotu Osayowanon now at large to help him serve the one year compulsory scheme  with an agreement that he would be paying him N19,000 monthly. Trouble started for Opeyemi, a resident of 25, Jebba Street, Ebute Meta, Lagos on 27 June, 2013 when he went to the Ikoyi/Obalende LCDA, Ikoyi, Lagos to register for the one year NYSC compulsory scheme as a graduate. During screening, the officer in charge of the programme reportedly discovered that all the documents he presented were fake.

BREAKING NEWS: Egyptian President Morsi Overthrown, Cairo Explodes

President Mohamed Morsi has been stripped of his power by the Egyptian army and the constitution has been suspended, General Abdel Fattah el-Sisi said in a statement. Egypt's chief justice of the constitutional court will become the interim president . Morsi has moved to an "undisclosed location," a presidential aide said. Morsi stated that he does not recognize the "military coup" and called on Egyptians to stand against it. "The address of the president yesterday did not meet the demands of the masses of the people," Sisi said adding the military held talks with various groups throughout Wednesday to work out a roadmap "putting an end to the state of division." "The military's roadmap consists of dissolving the constitution and holding early presidential elections," Sisi continued. He called for a panel would review the constitution and a national reconciliation committee which would include youth movements....

In dramatic scenes that unfolded in front of the world's media, a sheriff forced open the gates to the estate of Mandela's grandson Mandla with a pickaxe to allow three hearses to enter the property, where the disputed remains were moved in 2011, allegedly without the family's consent.
