ASUU Strike: Why Academic Activities Are Still Low at LASU

The Lagos State University (LASU) shall resume teaching activities after its Senate meets next week to design a new academic calendar, fix a schedule for students to return.   Mr. Sola Fosudo, the Acting Director, Centre for Information, LASU Press and Public Relations Unit, made this known to press in a telephone conversation on December 19, 2013, Thursday. “Technically, the school has resumed since the ASUU strike was suspended , but the senate will be meeting to design the timetable and also choose a date for resumption. “The decision of the Senate will be communicated to all as soon as the meeting is held,” he said. Bad roads: FG to reintroduce toll gates

A Lagos Toll Gate Against the backdrop of deteriorating Federal roads nationwide, the Federal Government may have decided to reintroduce tolling on its highways, to raise money to fix the roads. A policy document on the reintroduction of tolling may be forwarded to the Federal Executive Council by Works Minister, Mike Onolememen, for approval and implementation. In an effort to end the ongoing ASUU strike, the Federal Government has said it is committed to  spending N200 billion in the 2014 budget on universities in Nigeria for about three to four years until the universities are brought to world-class standard. This is in addition to the N100 billion dedicated and already made available for 2013. The government has also increased to N40 billion as a first installment for the funds in payment of earned allowances to the striking lecturers, which is an improvement from the N30 billion previously released. According to sources, the information is s contained in an internal statement made by the  Vice-Chancellor,  Professor Bolaji Aluko of Federal University of Otuoke and was seen on Wednesday by Sahara reporters.

Doctor Who Among the recovered 1960s footage is most of the classic story “The Web of Fear”, a black and white adventure in which the Time Lord, then played by Patrick Troughton, battles a robot yeti in London’s underground train system. The tapes were found gathering dust in a television station in Jos, a central Nigerian city plagued by chronic sectarian violence.

Nigeria analyst Andrew Walker assesses the implications of the claim. If the death of Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau is verified then it is undoubtedly a key milestone in the life of the group which, in almost exactly four years, has murdered thousands in northern and central Nigeria. Since 2009, the group (whose name roughly translated means "Western education is forbidden" in the local Hausa language) has waged a guerrilla insurgency against the state and a wide array of "soft" targets.

RCCG ordains 2,000 assistant pastors

ON the second day of its 61st  annual convention at the Redemption Camp on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, the Redeemed Christian Church of God, RCCG, responded to challenges of rapid expansion by the ordination of additional 2,402 assistant pastors into the mission. The over 2,000 new assistant pastors were commissioned at the morning session of the second day of convention, with a charge to intensify the evangelization of a perverse world in accordance with biblical injunction. The General Overseer of RCCG, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, prayed a short prayer for men and women, saying: “What you bind on earth would be bound in heaven and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven,” and they chorused a resounding A-M-E-N.

WAEC releases May/June 2013 examination results

Lagos -The WAEC on Wednesday released the full results of 1,543,683 candidates who sat for its May/June 2013 Secondary School Certificate Examination. The number represents 91.38 per cent of 1,689,188 candidates who registered for the examination,. The Head of National Office (HNO) of WAEC, Dr Charles Eguridu, announced the results on Wednesday when he addressed a news conference in Lagos. Eguridu said 889,636 candidates obtained six credits and above, while 1,074,065 others obtained five credits and above.

Investigations revealed that the prophet whose church is located at 89 Ukaegbu Road, Ogbor Hill has been involved in the unholy act with the victim since he engaged him as a worker in his church. Trouble started for the prophet when his victim who gave his name as Ndukwe took ill two weeks ago and worried by his continued deteriorating health condition, confessed to his family about the secret love affairs between him and the gay prophet.

The annual ceremony came as radioactive water leaks at the crippled Fukushima nuclear plant have stoked renewed fears about the plant's precarious state, and underscored broader worries about atomic power following Japan's 2011 nuclear crisis. In Hiroshima, ageing survivors, relatives, government officials and foreign delegates observed a moment of silence at 8:15am, the time of the detonation which turned the western Japanese city into a nuclear inferno.

He said APC was registered as a merger party because it met all the requirements. He stressed that the registration was “done right under the law”, adding that the commission would appeal against a court judgment which nullified its decision to de-register Fresh Party and others. Jega was answering questions at a stakeholders’ conference with media professionals and civil society organisations on Voter Register Optimisation and plans for continuous voter registration. He said it was not yet time to release the 2015 general elections timetable.

Some policemen in Lagos The Lagos State Police Command has commenced investigations into the killing of a police corporal, Ado Ayuba, who was lynched by some hoodlums in Suru Alaba area of the state. According to the police, the victim was beaten to death by an irate mob for allegedly killing a trader, Mustapha Mohammed, on July 30, 2013.

Man caught with 30 ATM cards, signed cheques

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has arrested one Kingsley Mudi over alleged ATM fraud. It was learnt that Mudi was caught red-handed on August 2, 2013 at Fidelity Bank ATM on Airport Road, Warri, Delta State. EFCC spokesman, Wilson Uwujaren, said 30 ATM cards of different banks were also found on him. Uwujaren said, “As of the time of the arrest, Mudi had already withdrawn N550,000, which were found in his possession.  Eight signed UBA cheques belonging to different persons were also found on him.” EFCC said Mudi, who claimed to be a Disc Jockey and an operator of a barbing saloon, “has volunteered useful information. B’Haram attacks military, police bases in Borno again

Thirty-five people, including two soldiers and a policeman,   have been killed  in two separate gunfights between security forces and members of the militant Islamist sect,  Boko Haram,  in  Borno State. The killings took place  on Sunday when the sect members launched  attacks on a riot  police base in Bama, a town close to the Cameroun border,  and the Multi-National Joint Task Force base in  Malam Fatori. A third incident in Gwoza, another Borno State community, was said to have resulted in the  death   of unspecified number of Boko Haram commanders. They all took place just as the   prosecutor of the International Criminal Court said  that after a preliminary investigation,  she  was convinced  that acts attributed to  Boko Haram  amounted to crimes against humanity.

The police in Plateau State have arrested a 21-year-old man who slaughtered an eight-year-old boy and removed his eyes for ritual purposes. Parading the suspect and his accomplices before journalists in Jos, the state capital, the Commissioner of Police, Mr Chris Olakpe, said the incident occurred in February at Shwar village in Kanke Local Government Area.

The U.S. International Trade Commission in June banned the import or sale of the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPad 3G and iPad 2 3G distributed by AT&T Inc, saying the devices infringed a patent owned by the South Korean electronics giant.

ASUP Agrees To Call Off Strike

At the meeting organized on Tuesday by the Joint Committee on Education of the National Assembly, the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) has agreed to call off the strike as soon as possible - once their demands are met. The meeting sought to resolve the confrontation between the Federal Government, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), and ASUP. Rukayat Rufai, the Minister of Education, and Chukwuemeka Nwogu, the Minister of Labour and Productivity were present at the meeting.

Shocking series of text messages between rapper 50 Cent and his 15-Year-Old son, Marquise Jackson has recently been published. It was reported last week that the rapper was arrested for allegedly attacking his baby mama. The texts were reportedly exchanged before them. The abusive exchange, which began at 10.59 p.m and lasted for more than an hour, started after Marquis failed to open the door when 50cent came to see him. The rapper used some very obscene words to describe his son while adding that he does not believe he (50 Cent) truly fathered the 15-year-old. US website, RadarOnline claim they verified the texts originated from a cell phone registered to G Unit Touring, the record label created and owned by 50 Cent. Yes of course, there is a link. The National Universities Commission in developing or revising university curriculum, factors in the content of the lower level curriculum, in this case, that of the secondary level. Take the B.Sc. Chemistry programme for example, efforts are made to ensure that the contents of 100-level courses are pitched at the exit level of the senior school certificate. This way, fresh students are guaranteed smooth transition from secondary to the university.

Strike: Govt Is Insincere, Says ASUU President

President of ASUU, Dr. Nasir Isa Fagge IN the heat of the current strike action embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, the association has accused the federal government of insincerity at moving the education sector forward.    It also blamed the government for speaking from both sides of the mouth.   The non-implementation of the 2009 agreement that was reached between the federal government and the union was among the four fundamental issues that forced the university dons to down tools. Also, the issue of university autonomy and academic freedom, coupled with staff welfare and condition of service also formed part of contending areas that triggered the industrial action.

BRT Degenerates Into Molue Five years after

THE pomp and ecstasy that heralded the arrival of the popular Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) System five years ago in Lagos is fast dying away as most buses on the system have basically become molue- Nigeria’s slang for rickety and sullied big buses.  The BRT is an intra-city public transport initiative instituted by the then Governor Bola Tinubu of Lagos State in 2007, but actuallised by Governor Babatunde Fashola-led administration in 2008 to alleviate challenges of Lagos heavy traffic jams, bus scarcity among others.

MBGN took place in Lagos on Saturday, July 6, at the Intercontinental hotel, Victoria Island. Miss Akudo from the initial Facebook pre-selection was seen to have got more ‘Likes’ than her counterparts.
