Abuja - Detained members of the Boko Haram sect pledged to help government end the terrorism crisis that has led to bloodshed in the northern parts of the country.

During a visit to Maiduguri by a Presidential Committee on dialogue and Peaceful Resolution of Security Challenges in the North, more than 50 members detained in Maiduguri denounced the sect and pleaded with government for amnesty.

One of the detainees, Adam Konto, who introduced himself to the Amir (commander) of the Bayan quarter, pledged to assist authorities if given a second chance.

He condemned the terror group.

“Most of us were brainwashed and recruited into the sect and given terrible acts to do without our full understanding of what we were doing,” he said.

Another detainee who identified himself as Babagana Saje, also expressed his readiness to denounce the sect, praised the authorities and police for not exacting revenge.

“The police have been treating us well. We have been allowed to take our baths and have been well fled," he said.
Chairman of the Presidential Committee, Kabir Turaki, assured the detainees their amnesty appeals will be looked into.

"If you (detainees) are sincere with the information we have gathered, we will bring you into the proposed amnesty agenda,” he said.
Maidugiri in the Borno State is the bedrock of Boko Haram terrorism.

The detained members were arrested following various military operations in the state.
