Newly registered All Progressive Congress (APC) yesterday in Abuja said it is planning to hold its national convention in November or December this year.
Interim national chairman of the party, Chief Bisi Akande, who gave this indication at the inaugural meeting of the interim executive committee and maiden media briefing at the party's national headquarters, also said the party is open to all those who want to join including President Goodluck Jonathan.
He said the party is out to win elections, therefore leaves its doors open for membership and that it will not be shut against anybody.
"We have set up committee headed by the deputy national chairman, Alhaji Aminu Masari to advise us. We are changing the structure of the party from foundation to the top, by November or December we would be having our convention to pick the leaders for the party," Akande said.
He said the committee was given up to 20th of this month to submit its report especially on the election in Anambra State so that the party would know the right step to take on the matter especially on the ward and state congresses in the state.
"As soon as the Masari led committee submits its report, the party would have to conduct primaries to pick a candidate for the Anambra State election. Definitely the party would participate in the election, therefore, the party would conduct its primaries to pick candidates for the election."
On the court cases and the controversy on the rival organisations bearing the APC acronym, he said, "We are not afraid of anybody, we are not aware that anybody or group of people had gone to court to stop the registered APC, nobody can stop us we have been registered and that is it."
He also warned that unauthorised people should stop speaking for the party. "We are warning those who are arrogating power to themselves or printing posters. It is not right; we have not given them that power. Alhaji Lai Mohammed who is the Interim Publicity Secretary of the party remains the spokesperson. Anybody cannot speak for the party except Alhaji Lai Mohammed; he is the only person authorized by the party to speak for it.
He also said the manifesto of the party would be upgraded and made into bullet points to make it easier for Nigerians to understand.
On the chances of the new party upstaging the PDP in 2015, Akande said APC is not new to Nigerians.
He said: "The ACN, ANPP and the CPC had been registered almost the same day with the PDP. This is only a merger, a mere change of name; we are members of the same family from the beginning and we are now back as one entity. Nigerians now have a choice between a bad government and the good one. From now on it is not too difficult for Nigerians to know which party has been inflicting pains on them for the last 14 years.
